Therapist Relationship Expert on Tips to Get Romantic This Valentine’s Day During COVID

Valentine’s Day is an excellent way for couples to take a little extra time and show each other their appreciation for all that they do. We can get so caught up in our busy schedules that we may forget to show that special someone the tender affection that they deserve. This year, however, could be a challenge for those who are used to making plans to go out and celebrate Valentine’s Day. With the ongoing pandemic, it is difficult for couples to find reservations or go out to public places that now have limited occupancy. And even so, many individuals are stressed over finances, employment, and other issues the pandemic has brought upon us. Additionally, now couples have to deal with the pressure of Valentine’s Day amongst these unprecedented times. This may put a little damper on your Valentine’s plans—or so you thought! Let’s look at some tips from certified mental health professionals and other experts on how you can swoon your significant other during the pandemic.

Switch up your routine: Can’t go to that fancy dinner reservation this year? No need to worry! Doing something different than the norm may help spark some romance into your life. Instead of your usual reservation, you can do one of the following: decorating your space at home, playing a sexy game, preparing a bath for two, or writing a sentimental note. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a major break from your routine for it to be special, it’s the thought that counts!

Go for a romantic walk: Whether it be at sunset or whenever it fits into your schedule, go for a romantic walk together. This is a great way to get out of the house and focus on your partner without worrying about being “romantic enough”. There are many ways to spark an intimate conversation, but one particular way is by reflecting on the past. You could ask things like: What was the first thing you noticed about me? Do you remember our first kiss? On our first date, what excited you the most about me? What is one awkward moment that you wouldn’t want to relive, but you can laugh about now? 

Celebrate with others: Instead of feeling pressured by romantic love, you could always celebrate with neighbors, friends, and family and celebrate the love you have for those wonderful people in your lives. Though you may not be able to have a grand get-together, you can plan something virtually or even outside.

Take the pressure off of sex: Valentine’s Day is often put on a pedestal where you should go to dinner at the fanciest spot in town and make love right after, in order to woo your partner. Who says you can’t make your own rules? If you typically start to get tired after 5 pm, it may be a better idea to be intimate with your partner earlier in the day. Perhaps, you can make a morning of breakfast in bed, followed by a lovely couples’ shower. 

Video dating: If you are meeting someone for the first time, it may be a good option to do a virtual date. This will give you time to get to know each other, and maybe you could make some fun games for the date!

Enjoy the outdoors: A great outdoors date would be to have a romantic picnic. Bring along fresh fruits, make some sandwiches, and other snacks that your partner and you will enjoy. You can bring a speaker to play your favorite songs, or just listen to the sounds of nature while striking up a conversation. If a picnic isn’t your style, perhaps you can go hiking or mountain biking together. As long as you two are enjoying an activity together, that’s all that matters!

Go for a cruise: Why not go for a drive like you did when you were younger? You can put on the radio and listen to the songs that brought you two together. Maybe even drive by where you used to live and take a trip down memory lane. This time alone with your partner will draw you two closer on this intimate day.

With these tips, you partner is sure to fall in love with you all over again. Just make sure you social distance in public and wear a mask if necessary. Otherwise, enjoy diving deeper into your romantic relationship this Valentine’s Day!
