Dealing With Holiday Loneliness | Orlando Counselor

By Published On: December 15th, 20211.6 min read

The holidays are known as the time to be surrounded by family and friends. However, for many, it can be a time of loneliness. Many people experience situations like having family and friends who live long-distance, ruminate about lost relationships, or maybe even grieve over a loss of a loved one which can make this season a tough time for some.

Here are some tips to get you through this difficult season:

  1. Practice Self-Care. Focus on yourself by practicing self-care. Self-care may look like going for a walk, reading a book, cooking your favorite meal, taking a bath. There is no right or wrong way to treat yourself. Do whatever makes you happy.
  2. Take A Break From Social Media. Social Media could trigger some unwanted feelings that one would like to stay away from this holiday season.
  3. Make New Traditions. Change your holiday expectations by creating your own holiday traditions. If you are on your own, try to do things that you enjoy this season.
  4. Volunteer / Help Your Community. Volunteer at local community centers. Donate toys to children in need. Help your neighbors set up for the holidays.
  5. Find a New Hobby. Having more free time can increase one’s feelings of loneliness. Use this time to find or participate in some hobbies.
  6. Talk to a therapist. Seeking out a therapist to talk to can help identify unhealthy thoughts that you have about the holiday season and find new ways to help you cope with loneliness.
