5 Practical Ways to Show Mom Appreciation on Mother’s Day.

This weekend will be Mother’s Day and many moms are expecting to get the usual special treatment:  breakfast in bed, cards, flowers or chocolate.  However, if you would ask most moms they would say ask for something quite different.  Moms are the Captain of the Ship of the Home.  Even if our husbands are helpful we are the keepers of everyone’s schedule, can multi-task three different chores and cooking at once and can still find time to bake cookies for our child’s class the next day.  Although we may enjoy being a mom the truth is it is exhausting!

Here are 5 Practical Ways to Show Moms Appreciation on Mother’s Day.

  1. Let Her Sleep. Sleep is hard to come by as a mom, especially for those with babies or toddlers.  Even if the kids are excited to give her cards or presents Mother’s Day morning, let her have some extra rest.  She will be well rested and ready to enjoy her day with the family.
  2. Have the House Cleaned. Give her a weekend where she doesn’t have to do laundry, dishes, vacuum or any of her usual chores.  Get the kids involved in cleaning for Mom and if not apps like HANDY allow you to hire a house cleaner on short notice for a reasonable amount.
  3. Give Her the Gift of Time. Moms are always saying there are never enough hours in the day to get things done.  As much as it is a weekend to spend family time with her, tell her to plan for some alone time for her to think, read, shop, nap or spend time with her girlfriends.  She is guaranteed to come back refreshed.
  4. Be Original in Showing Appreciation.  Mothers are very hard on themselves.  21st Century moms are expected to have it all together but more times than not we don’t.  We yell at our kids, buy GMO foods and let our kids skip baths just for the sake of sanity sometimes all the while feeling guilty.  Giving a card is a sweet gesture but telling her 10 things you love about her and having the kids draw a picture of how their mom cares for them goes a long way to show meaningful appreciation.
  5. Cook for Her. Moms love when they don’t have to lift a finger in the kitchen.  Get the kids involved in playing restaurant at home.  Give her a crayon drawn menu to choose from and then help the kids cook.  Even if it turns out to be chicken fingers and fries on a fancy picnic plate she will love it.  She will love you it even more if it becomes a regular gesture and she doesn’t have to cook at least one time per week.

Enjoy your Mom this Weekend.  Happy Mother’s Day from Your TLC Family!
